Math Hall of Fame

Congratulations to our first member of the Math Hall of Fame!!!
I am so proud of you Zachary!
Math Hall of Fame is school wide program that we use to help promote math fluency.  First grade students must answer 30 math problems correctly in 90 seconds. Students will have the opportunity to earn a coveted spot in the Math Hall of Fame on the last Friday of each month. Feel free to stop by the bulletin board in the lobby to see all of W.S.E's  Math Hall of Fame members.  Keep studying those math facts!!

Literacy Night

We had a wonderful turn out for our first and second grade literacy night! First graders listened to the story Elmer and created Elmer puppets! Thank you to all the parents who attended this fun event! We will have another literacy night coming this spring! Hope to see you there! Happy Reading!

Compliment Party!

We had our first compliment party today in the beautiful weather with popsicles! These hardworking students received 11 compliments from teachers and administrators for excellent hallway, support class, and cafeteria behavior! Way to go Ms. Johnson's team!!! I anticipate many more parties to come! Give your student a hug for great behavior!

Our compliment chart is a positive incentive for the class to work as a team to earn compliments from  teachers/administrators. We work hard to set good examples and be good role models for our school.

What to Expect the First Week!

Homework
Your child needs to complete homework every night. It is imperative that you read with your child daily in order to help him/her maximize their full reading potential. Starting the second week of school, your child will be required to read two selections from the reading book Monday through Thursday. Please sign the Reading Log with the title of the book, who read the book, and how your child was able to retell and answer questions about the story. Your child will also receive a Math Contract. This contract will be used for two weeks. Pick and color four boxes each week and complete them on a separate piece of paper. If there are spaces in the box, the items may be completed on the Math Contract sheet. You may complete the assignments each week as you wish and your schedule allows. Homework will be taken out of the binder every Friday morning.

Parent Survey
Please complete and return the Parent Survey that will be sent home this week. Please record your email address. I will create a class email group that will be used to send home important class and school information/activities. If you do not have access to an email account, please let me know. The best way to contact me is through email. I will do my best to respond to phone calls and notes in a timely manner. However, I check my email several times during the day. My email address is ajohnson9@scsk12.org. The school phone number is 416-8900. If there is an emergency, please contact the office!

Student Reading Books
Reading books will be sent home every night with your child starting the second week of school. Please use this as an opportunity to read with your child in order to extend their learning by practicing weekly sight words, phonic skills, fluency, and comprehension. Your child will read the first selection in the reading book on Monday and Tuesday night. Read the second selection on Wednesday and Thursday night. Please return the reading book to school every day. WE WILL use the book for daily classroom lessons and activities.

KK Review Week
The first week of school is dedicated to the review of KK skills, assessment of students, and building a caring community of learners. We will practice classroom routines and procedures and get to know one another. This week your child will need to practice the KK High Frequency Word list. These are words your child should have mastered in KK. Practice the KK High Frequency word list with your child each night this week. It is vital they have mastered recognition of these words to help aid in their fluency of reading grade level text. If your child is having difficulty with any of the words, please continue to practice them until all have been mastered.

Please help your child write their Academic Hope and Dream for their First Grade year. Have them write the Hope and Dream in their own handwriting using the “Hpoes & Dreams” sheet in the folder. Please return the Hope and Dream on Thursday and we will share it with the class.

Weekly Assessments
All skills, weekly words, and story titles will be listed on the class Newsletter. Your child will be given a weekly reading test that pertains to the story in the reading book and a math test. In addition, they may be given a cold read, grammar, vocabulary, or phonetic test to assess mastery of weekly skills.
